Sealing & Surface Care

Sealing and Surface Care

Here at Stonelab we believe that the sealing stage of your stone is the most important part of the restoration process. With many different types of sealants it is important to ensure that your sealant is specifically tailored to your Stone to provide adequate protection but to also provide you with a look and feel that you can fall in love with.

Water Based Impregnators

Our water-based impregnators are suitable for almost all types of stone. The idea of an impregnating sealant is to penetrate deep into the pores of the stone, which in turn concentrates the material to prevent any non-acidic liquids from penetrating deep into the stone and protecting the floor from within. We can apply our water-based impregnators in any environment or to any form of stone such as vanity units, floors, patios, facades etc… The advantage of using applying a water-based sealant is that the curing time is substantially less than opting for a solvent based impregnator or oil-based impregnator and water-based sealants tend to give off very little odour in comparison. Another advantage of opting for one of our water-based impregnators is that they are ECO-FRIENDLY and certified by the green building council. If you have any more questions about our water-based impregnating sealants, feel free to get in touch either by telephone or by email and one of our technicians can assist you.

Water Based Wax Sealants

Our water-based wax sealants are an ideal option for sealing most stones with a medium-to-medium high absorption rate. We would generally pair our water-based wax sealants with a primary coat of one of our water based impregnating sealants to firstly protect the stone from within. The idea of a water-based wax is to create a very thin layer on top of your stone that will act as a barrier between your stone and the external environment. This will also help with maintenance going forward and you will find mopping or cleaning much easier as you are cleaning any dirt off of the sealant rather that the stone itself. The advantage of using applying a water-based sealant is that the curing time is substantially less than opting for a solvent based sealant or oil-based sealant and water-based sealants tend to give off very little odour in comparison. Another advantage of opting for one of our water-based wax sealants is that they are ECO-FRIENDLY and certified by the green building council. Solvent Based Impregnators

Just like with water-based impregnators, a solvent based impregnator acts as internal protection within stone to prevent any non-acidic liquids from penetrating into the natural stone. The main difference between water-based and solvent-based is that solvent-based impregnators tend to penetrate slightly deeper into the stone as solvents do not evaporate compared to water-based products which to a certain level do. This will provide a slightly increased level of protection compared to a water-based sealant. We would generally apply a solvent based impregnator to denser, less absorbent materials that do not require a top coat sealer. This will help to give maximum protection to the stone as the sealant can penetrate deep into the material and can act as an highly concentrated internal barrier. If you have any more questions about our solvent based impregnators, feel free to get in touch either by telephone or by email and one of our technicians can assist you.

Colour Enhancing Sealants

The idea of applying a colour enhancing sealant is to protect the stone but to also change the look of the material by darkening and enhancing the natural characteristics that run throughout the stone. We have a range of colour enhancing sealants that can be applied to natural stone of all densities. From terracotta to limestone, there is a colour enhancing sealant that will work for your stone. Colour enhancing sealants also act as impregnators which are designed to prevent any non-acidic liquids from penetrating deep into your stone. Oil Extraction

If you have oil damage within your natural stone that has penetrated deep into the material there are no guarantees that the staining can be completely removed as there is no real way of understanding how deep the stain has penetrated and how the stonework may have previously been treated. We use chemical process’ to achieve the best result possible when it comes to oil extraction and the stages are as follows. We firstly strip and clean the stone to eliminate any external factors that may prevent our oil extraction solutions from penetrating deep enough. Once stripped, cleaned, and dry we can apply our specialist oil extracting solution to the stone which over the course of a few hours will help to draw the stain from the material and closer to the surface. This will give us a good idea of how the oil is reacting to our chemicals and we can understand the level of restoration achievable. Once we have reached the best result possible, we can then re-seal the stone and buff over, so it is ready to be enjoyed and admired again!

Crystallising Powders

Crystallising powders are an ideal solution for maximising the level of shine on your polished natural stone. Once we have resurfaced your natural stone to the highest shine achievable with diamond bonded polishing pads, we can further increase the shine of the material by applying a crystallising powder. This will create an almost mirror finish to your natural stone leaving you with a result made infamous by hotel reception areas. Once this process is complete, we can seal the stone and leave you with a stone floor you can be proud to call your own.

Polishing Creams

We can apply polishing creams to both porcelain tiles and to natural stone. We have a range of many different creams that can be applied to create a high shine polish without the need for grinding or resurfacing. If your polished porcelain tiles are starting to look a little tired and dull, an application of our restoration creams and polishing creams will bring the tiles back to the same look and feel as they did when they came out of the factory. The same theory can be applied to natural stone. Providing the stone has not been damaged by etch marks or oil staining, a coat of polishing cream and mechanical buffing can massively increase the level of shine on your tiles. It will also deepen the colour of the stone, making the material look much richer. This is a fantastic option for those who would like to restore the shine of their tiles without having to invest in an intense procedure of resurfacing the natural stone which takes a lot longer and is much more labor intensive.
